Following a fresh contract update, Rangers manager Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen need to act quickly to clinch a transfer for Tommy Conway, a striker for Bristol City.
During the January transfer window, there were rumors linking the Scottish youth international to both Old Firm rivals Celtic and the Ibrox club. Premier League teams are also reportedly keeping an eye on his development [Bristol Live, 6 February].
Conway’s current Ashton Gate contract expires in the summer of 2025, but Robins manager Liam Manning has disclosed that the striker has received a new contract offer. However, Manning also acknowledged that the club and the player have not yet reached a mutual understanding.
According to Bristol Live (24 April), he stated: “Not right now. We genuinely want to hold onto him. We’ve been very clear about that, I believe. He has received an offer, so in the end, the choice will be his.
“I really enjoy working with him; he’s been great.” Since he has been one, I believe we can significantly advance his career. He doesn’t need to pursue anything too quickly, in my opinion.
“We want to keep Tommy, and the initiative is now in his hands.”
When healthy this season, Conway has been a mainstay in the Robins’ front line, making 37 appearances, contributing one assist and nine goals. He also made headlines when he scored the FA Cup winning goal against West Ham United.
The interest in him before of the summer transfer window will probably have intensified due to his goals against Premier League opponents, thus the Gers may not have much time to act quickly to get him.
In the summer transfer window at Ibrox, will Philippe Clement and Rangers recruit a new striker?
The consensus among experts and supporters is that the Gers should acquire a new number nine during the summer transfer window. Even though Cyriel Dessers has made progress, he still lacks the consistency needed for a club that wants to contend for the championship.
Even if players like Bojan Miovski and Lawrence Shankland are expected to finish their move to Glasgow, Conway might be a good value for the Light Blues if he chooses not to sign a new contract.
As Manning pointed out, the striker has the last say in the matter, so if he learns that other teams are interested in signing him, he might be hesitant to sign.
It is unclear if Clement and Koppen will pursue this deal further, but they must move quickly to bring the 21-year-old north of the border if they are sincere in their interest before the summer transfer window opens.
