Jamie Reuben, a co-owner of Newcastle United, called the team’s pre-game flag show before their victory over Sheffield United “brilliant.” The spectators in the Gallowgate waved Brazilian flags as the two teams emerged onto the St. James’ Park field.
The poster said, “From Alianca and Rio to Newcastle Upon Tyne, a home away from home,” and was directed towards Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, the Brazilian duo for the Magpies. Joelinton and Bruno, our Geordies from Brazil.
While Guimaraes has excelled this season and the team hopes to stick onto him this summer amid heated transfer rumors, Joelinton recently extended his contract with Newcastle United. The Brazilian’s contract has a sizable release clause that, should it be activated, would prevent the club from rejecting offers for him. Eddie Howe has stated that the provision is only activated until the end of June, though.
Guimaraes scored a spectacular goal to round up the pre-game show. He got Anthony Gordon’s deep ball and used his diving header to beat Wes Foderingham.
The Magpies took the lead in the game thanks to a goal from Guimaraes, and they had breathing room shortly after thanks to a penalty kick from Alexander Isak.
Reuben took to X following the game to commend the effort, calling it “brilliant,” and then to lament the outcome, saying, “Brilliant second half performance from @NUFC – commiserations to @SheffieldUnited and best of luck for the future.”
Newcastle finished the day in seventh place in the Premier League standings thanks to their victory and Burnley’s late equalizer at Old Trafford.
