We reported on an Ecuadorian report a little more than a week ago, claiming that panic broke out at the national team’s headquarters due to a new injury sustained by a Brighton & Hove Albion player.

There was concern that Pervis Estupiñán, who sustained an ankle injury while playing for his Premier League club, could not be able to play in the Copa America this summer or might not be fully fit.

As of right now, it appears that the worst case scenario—the former—is the actual situation for Ecuador. “We will see how the boys go, that they respect our injuries,” press conference speaker Félix Sánchez Bas stated on Thursday. Pervis is a key member of our team who is unable to go with us.

The summer competition, which takes place in the US from June 20 to July 14, is officially off for the Brighton star, according to the Ecuadorian publication Diario Expreso. He will not be ready for several months following ankle surgery.
Albeit devastating for Ecuador as well as for Estupiñán personally, Brighton will be hopeful that a summer off will allow him to return fit and fresh for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
