Phil Parkinson has broken his silence following Wrexham’s decision to release eight players.
After earning a second consecutive promotion to secure a place in League One next season, Wrexham’s squad are currently enjoying a post-season celebratory trip to Las Vegas.
However, that didn’t stop the club from publishing its retained players list on Friday morning, and confirming the release of eight first-teamers upon their expiration of their contracts this summer.
First-team captain Luke Young and club captain Ben Tozer will both depart along with long-serving goalkeeper Rob Lainton, defenders Aaron Hayden, Jordan Tunnicliffe and Callum McFadzean and youngsters Owen Cushion and Dan Davies.
Though the timing of the announcement may appear brutal, it’s likely those players not retained where made aware of the club’s decision before they departed for Vegas.
Speaking to Wrexham’s club website, manager Phil Parkinson said: “I’d like to thank all the players for their efforts over the last few years. They’ve all played a part in our success and I’d like to wish them all the best for the future.
“The professionalism shown by all the lads has been excellent, and likewise those who have not been playing as regularly still play an important part with their attitudes and standards off the pitch.
“Ben Tozer and Luke Young have not had as much game time in the last few months, but as club captain and first-team captain they have showed great leadership for the Club.
“All the players leaving the Club go with our very grateful thanks for their efforts and contributions during their time at Wrexham.”
Wrexham have confirmed that the contract of former Premier League star James McClean has been automatically renewed, while new deals will be offered to Steven Fletcher, Mark Howard and Aaron James.
Wrexham have been linked with a move for Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, whose deal with the Championship winners is set to expire this summer.
