With a quarterback on the roster who was a Pro Bowler and an MVP candidate, a guy who was third in the NFL with 4,516 yards, first in completion percentage (69.5%), first in touchdowns (36) and second in rating (105.9), it’s a little strange for the Cowboys to be in the midst of the 2024 NFL offseason and still be unsure about the franchise’s future at the most important position in the league.

That’s just the way it is for the team and Dak Prescott, whose heroics throughout the regular season were insufficient to prevent another NFL playoff disaster, as the team lost its home opener against the Packers. Prescott’s future in Dallas is uncertain as he enters the last year of his contract.

But, despite being purely hypothetical, USA Today provides some consolation. The website projects that the Cowboys will select quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the son of Denver coach Deion Sanders and a team legend, to replace Prescott in the early 2025 NFL mock draft.

According to the website this week, “Dak Prescott hasn’t engaged in any contract talks yet and can force his way onto the free-agent market – where he’d be sure to command an astronomical payout.” Nevertheless, there is still plenty of time for Prescott to work out a deal to stay in Dallas for the foreseeable future.

“It would be interesting if Sanders took charge of the Cowboys’ attack in the event that Jerry Jones’ worst nightmare came true.”

Known as the “Most Polarizing Prospect,” Shedeur Sanders
Curt Popejoy of USA Today dubbed Sanders “the most polarizing prospect in the country” during the previous season. Of course, that doesn’t bother the Cowboys.

Without a doubt, he was right. He followed his father to Boulder last year after two outstanding seasons at Jackson State, and he immediately made an impression by throwing for 510 yards and four touchdowns in his Colorado debut against 16th-ranked TCU. After that, he played in two more games, both victories over Colorado State and Nebraska, and finished with six touchdowns, one interception, and 941 yards.

Sanders continued to put up numbers after that, but the Buffaloes’ 1-7 record took some of the shine off of him and encouraged him to come back for his senior year instead of taking a chance on the quarterback position in the top-heavy 2024 NFL draft, which saw six quarterbacks selected in the first 12 picks.

Sanders gained attention for claiming he was superior to every quarterback selected in this record-breaking draft, despite the record and the caliber of players at the position.

“I may be biased, but I don’t think there is a quarterback that is better than me,” Sanders said to Brice Butler of Sports Illustrated during Super Bowl week. “I have never seen a quarterback experience as much hardship as I did—four [offensive coordinators] in four years.”

“I have a lot of pressure coming from an HBCU to a Power Five program. Many people are unaware of how much more hardship there is than you might imagine simply by being Deion Sanders’ son.

Cowboys may not be able to draft the best quarterback in 2025.
Despite the seeming hyperbole surrounding his self-promotion, Sanders does have supporters. Sanders might be the first choice in the draft, according to Field Yates of ESPN, which would make him nearly impossible for the Cowboys to acquire short of a major trade.

Since Sanders’ superb pocket passing is so remarkable, I genuinely believe he should be selected first in the draft. .. How, given enough time and space, he can sculpt a defense

However, the Draft Network projects him as a Day 2 pick, illustrating the scouts’ differing opinions about Sanders. His 49 sacks taken raise a serious concern. “Sanders has a tendency to keep the football in his pocket longer. As a result, unneeded sacks and hits occur. He’ll wait for paths to escape the coverage, the website stated.

Similar to how his father was throughout his tenure with the Cowboys, he would make an intriguing presence in Dallas.
