The executive director of Wrexham has not ruled out making a spectacular move to get Jamie Vardy, a Leicester City great.
After receiving back-to-back promotions from non-league football to League One, the aspirational Hollywood-backed team will want to bolster their squad once again this summer.
It’s been an incredible journey for the Welsh team, who have seen their fortunes transformed following the arrival of actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney three years ago, with a series of smart signings helping them end their 15 year spell outside of the Football League.
Paul Mullin dropped from League Two to help spearhead their promotion push out of the National League, and has since become a hero in Wrexham thanks to his 100 goals and 11 assists in 133 games.
Winger Elliot Lee then left Luton’s books to sign with the Dragons, while Wrexham chiefs also managed to lure a trio of former Premier League stars to the Racecourse Ground in Ben Foster – who has since retired – James McClean and Steven Fletcher.
And it appears another could now be in their sights
With Leicester, Vardy has successfully clinched his return to the top level after scoring 18 goals in the league to lead the Foxes to the Championship title.
However, the 37-year-old striker’s future at King Power Stadium is in doubt as his deal is set to expire in the summer.
In his 13 seasons with the team, Vardy has solidified his place in Leicester history. He arrived as the first-ever non-league player to earn £1 million, helped the team win the FA Cup and Community Shield, and assisted in the club’s Premier League promotion.
Vardy has 190 goals in blue Leicester City uniforms overall.
There are rumors that he may be given a new contract to remain at the King Power over the summer, but would he be interested in taking on the Wrexham adventure?
When questioned lately about a potential trade for Vardy, Humphrey Ker, the executive director of the Welsh team, declined to rule anything out.
Ker told SPORTbible, “There’s nothing to say that Jamie Vardy wouldn’t be a great Wrexham player.”
“It’s not a name I’ve had mentioned inside the building before but, you know, age and profile wouldn’t put us off.”
Having confirmed the departure of eight players at the end of the season, including cherished club captain Luke Young, Wrexham looks to be making place for new arrivals.
However, the owners have given the promotion-winning squad an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas before they go.
When they return from their post-season vacations, it will all be business as usual. Kerr will be joining talkSPORT this week to discuss their aims for League One the following season and their past two seasons.
“We have every chance of achieving something special again next year,” he said to Hawksbee and Jacobs.
We’ll have to wait and see if Vardy is part of that.
