Following West Bromwich Albion’s first game in the Championship play-offs, Baggies manager Carlos Corberan had a word with the Spanish media.
The coach was interviewed by Cadena Ser, and first talked about their campaign for promotion to the Premier League, as they just had a 0-0 draw against Southampton in the semifinal first leg.
Corberan talked about the big challenge they’ll have in the second game, highlighting how big that match will be for West Brom.
“That’s the way it is. When you’re talking about a challenge like this, to get up to the Premier League, you know that you have to play very demanding matches of an enormous calibre. We are very excited to be able to play them, compete in them and see how far we can go,” Carlos Corberan told Cadena Ser.
The coach hasn’t worked in Spain since 2013, when he was coaching one of Alcorcón’s youth teams. He then started working abroad, and was asked whether he’s planning go back home anytime soon. He seems to leave that possibility completely open, and isn’t in a rush..
“You never know. I’m Spanish and always follow Spanish football and the Primera División is a big league, so you never know. I think it’s important to be in the places where you are wanted and where you can develop your ideas.”
This time at St. Mary’s, West Brom and Southampton play the semifinal second leg on Friday evening. The winner faces either Norwich City or Leeds United at Wembley on May 26th.
Corberan talked about how special it would be to manage a game there, especially on such a special occasion that could lead them to promotion.
“I coached a game there several seasons ago and it stuck in my mind. They are matches of a tremendous dimension. It’s such a unique and beautiful atmosphere that I would like to repeat the experience myself this season.”
