Newcastle United are trying to sign a new goalkeeper to either push Nick Pope for starts between the sticks or even outright replace the England international as their starter.
Although Newcastle are searching the transfer market for potential options, Premier League star Aaron Ramsdale, an Arsenal backup, has been linked to the Magpies.
Joel Bland of The Sunday Times reports that while Newcastle is attempting to get Giorgi Mamardashvili, the goalkeeper for Valencia, transferred before the European Championships, they have not yet reached a verbal agreement.
The ultimate transfer fee for the Georgian goalkeeper should total more than 30 million pounds, and Mamardashvili has a release clause worth over 80 million pounds.
Since being called up as Valencia’s starter three seasons ago, the 23-year-old goalkeeper—one of the biggest phenoms at the position in world football—has been among the best in Europe.
In comparison to an average goalie, Mamardashvili stopped 10 goals in the previous season by saving 73.8 percent of the shots he faced.
As a result, Mamardashvili, who will be 23 years old in ten years, is already a superior goalkeeper than Pope and can start for Newcastle.
In the event that the Magpies are able to secure him for the reported thirty million pounds, he may prove to be an incredible value during the summer transfer window. He appears to be their #1 pick to sign this year in goal.
