After deciding to sign with Colchester United, Matt Macey teamed up with a former Pompey manager.
The 29-year-old joined the League Two team after being cut loose by the Blues earlier this month. Although Macey only joined Fratton Park after the old manager was fired in January 2023, he becomes Colchester’s first summer acquisition and the first player that U’s manager Danny Cowley has taken from his previous club.
The day when John Mousinho was named head coach coincided with Macey’s initial loan move to Pompey from Luton Town. The 6’7″ goalie appeared in 21 games and recorded 15 clean sheets during the 2022–2023 season’s second half.
After being released by Luton in September of last year, he returned to the Blues in January of 2024 to cover for Will Norris. This meant that Ryan Schofield was no longer the backup goalkeeper. Nevertheless, Macey did not play a part in Pompey’s League One victory last month, starting only 20 games out of his possible total and behind Will Norris on the bench.
Reflecting on his second stint at Fratton Park earlier this month, Macey stated, “I would have loved to have played, but, as everyone knows, Will’s form has been unbelievable and that’s the way football goes sometimes.”
“Everyone deserves it, and the club’s promotion is the most important thing.”
Macey played 14 games for the Hatters at Luton Town prior to rejoining Pompey. The keeper has also represented Hibs, Plymouth Argyle, and Accrington. The Bath native goalie also represented Arsenal in the Europa League.
After Joe Rafferty and Sean Raggett joined League One team Rotherham United this summer, Macey is the third player from Pompey who was released and found a club. Although they are still without a club, Lee Evans, Josh Martin, Ryan Schofield, Haji Mnoga, Harry Jewitt-White, Liam Vincent, and Josh Dockerill also left.
