A highly-rated midfield player is expected to join Newcastle United’s academy.
The Magpies have agreed to recruit Portsmouth’s 14-year-old CJ Afumuzor, according to our sister publication The News.
Afumuzor worked at Pompey for eight years, and the recently promoted Championship team is owed a transfer fee. The Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP), which is overseen by the Premier League, limits how much they can get.
Two weeks ago, the adolescent announced on Instagram that he was leaving, writing, “23/24 season done.” Massive thank you to @pompey and everyone at the club for progressing over the last 8 years. Anticipating exciting things in the future🤞🏾⚽️
As word of Afumuzor’s relocation started to circulate, some followers left comments on his Instagram pictures. Afumuzor loved one comment that said, “welcome to Newcastle.”
Alfie Harrison, a bright young player from Manchester City, is the most recent addition to the Magpies’ roster of youthful talent. Following their summertime arrivals from Birmingham City and Wolves, respectively, Trevan Sanusi and Leo Sharer have gone on to secure professional contracts and play for the England under-17 team.
A year ago, United signed Sam Alabi from Oldham Athletic and added Kacey Wooster and Michael Mills from Southend United and Port Vale, respectively, below the under-21 and under-18 levels.
