A social media update from James Tavernier has split Rangers fans with some lashing out at the skipper’s decision to post a highlight video of last season after missing out on another league title.

The 32-year-old – wanted by former Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard for a reunion in Saudi Arabia – uploaded a compilation video entitled 23/24 to Instagram on Saturday and the reaction was mixed. Some heralded Tavernier’s eye for a goal in a season as he netted 24 time. But other Rangers diehards – vexed after another season finishing behind Celtic – were less than impressed with clips including a losing effort in the Scottish Cup Final.

Ibrox supporters are only weeks removed from calling out former loanee Fabio Silva and Todd Cantwell for a series of uploads days before the Scottish Cup Final against Celtic. Rangers punters, after watching Brendan Rodgers’ side steam past them towards a 12th title in 13 years, were hurt after the pair posted a series of goal pictures from a 3-3 draw dead rubber.

And now Tavernier is feeling the brunt of it as speculation grows over his Ibrox future. The hall of famer has heard from both sides of the argument but many are downbeat for Tavernier failing to read the room. One fan named Sam – posting on X – said: “Serious question, why are you doing this? We had another failed season, one that had led to significant financial implications. It’s embarrassing James, maybe you should have inserted your failures this season, there has been many. This is a bad take.”

Richard then weighed in, adding: “Big fan of Tavernier. But that video is tone deaf. Guy is absolutely not in tune with public opinion. He gets some bad press and unfair hate but that is just really stupid of him.”

And Legion said: “If you don’t think James Tavernier being the captain of Rangers is even a slight problem then you deserve to continue to watch us win nothing.” But there were others stating a highlight video is not the barometer of his suitability to remain as Rangers captain. But – social media updates or otherwise – that could become a real decision if Gerrard follows up on his significant interest.
