Rangers have mostly focused on signing young talents this summer but could now move to sign an experienced Scotland international.
Rangers needed to be active in this transfer market and Nils Koppen has made his plans absolutely clear.
Young talents with big potential for the future are the focus for Rangers this summer and potentially moving forward.
Connor Barron is the oldest Rangers signing so far this summer at 21, only just ahead of 20-year-old trio Jefte, Oscar Cortes and Clinton Nsiala.
21-year-old Moroccan striker Hamza Igamane should be confirmed as a Rangers player very soon and Bayern Munich talent Yusuf Kabadayi is wanted.
There is a real youth movement taking place at Rangers thanks to Koppen, but some experience alongside these promising talents would not go amiss.
Rangers want Kenny McLean
Rangers will look to add a homegrown player this summer as former academy goalkeeper Liam Kelly is expected to make a return to Ibrox.
Other homegrown players should be on the radar too and it’s no surprise to see Kenny McLean being linked once again.
It seems that McLean is linked with Rangers in every transfer window and it is now that time again.
The Daily Record claim that Rangers are now keen to launch a move to finally bring McLean to Ibrox.
The Norwich City midfielder is understood to have been watched by Rangers at the end of last season as well as during the European Championships.
McLean still has two years to run on his Norwich deal and it’s unclear just whether the Canaries would be interested in selling.
The 32-year-old midfielder – who came off the bench as Scotland were dumped out of Euro 2024 by Hungary – serves as Norwich captain.
McLean not only featured in every Championship game last season, but remarkably missed just 51 minutes of action.
The reliability, experience and leadership McLean provides may be valued heavily by Rangers around so many young signings, and the Scot would surely fancy the move to Ibrox.
McLean’s past comments on Rangers
McLean spent a couple of years in the Rangers youth ranks as a kid and was heavily linked with the club during his Aberdeen days.
Speaking in 2021, McLean admitted that he loves Rangers and comes from a family of Gers fans.
McLean noted that leaving the club was difficult but he would love to return to Rangers in the future, believing that a move would be ‘pretty special’.
“It wasn’t easy to leave Rangers but I wasn’t part of their plans. My dad’s had a big influence on what I’ve always done and he knew I needed to move away to progress,” said McLean. “My whole family are Rangers fans but I’m sure they just wanted me to be happier again. As a young boy you just want to go, play and enjoy yourself and I wasn’t doing that as much. It was the right thing but there was no bitterness about it.”
“I mean, it’s… (sighs) I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t something I’d want to do. As a kid that’s what you want to do, play for your boyhood team. Right now I’m about to play in the Premier League again, so I’m not thinking about it! But for me and my family, it would be pretty special. I grew up a Rangers fan, used to go to the games with my dad and as a kid in Glasgow, you support Rangers or Celtic and you want to play for one of them. So I was on the better side,” he added.
McLean may feel that the time is right for a move.
The last thing McLean would want to do is join Rangers when he is past his best, not doing justice to himself or to Rangers.
Now approaching his mid-30’s, McLean would be forgiven for thinking that it’s now or never in terms of living out that Rangers dream – and the Gers will surely be looking to use that notion to try and tempt him into the move.
