Minteh won the KNVB Cup and scored 11 goals for Feyenoord during a successful 2023-24 loan spell, including scoring in the Champions League. The 19-year-old was set to return to Newcastle for further assessment in pre-season but has attracted serious interest from clubs across Europe.
And Newcastle’s need to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules could see them reluctantly sell the winger for a significant fee. The PSR deadline for the 2023-24 season is June 30, meaning The Magpies would have to agree a deal before then for the transfer fee to be included in last season’s calculations.
French side Lyon are currently engaged in discussions with Minteh while Ligue 1 rivals Marseille are also keen in the Gambian forward.
At the end of the 2023-24 campaign, Newcastle head coach Howe was asked about the club’s plan regarding Minteh. But Howe didn’t give much away
“The plan at the moment is he will come back in to us pre-season and we’ll take it from there,” he said last month. Reflecting on Minteh’s spell at Feyenoord, Howe added: “He’s done really well and he’s attacked the challenge of going on loan to a new league with new teammates, played in the Champions League, prestigious competitions and he’s done really, really well this year and I think he can be very proud of his efforts.”
He continued: “I tend not to directly communicate, I find you’re better off letting the players concentrate on their own situation and not give them too many distractions but let’s wait and see what happens in this next step.”
