Newcastle United are trying to strengthen their defence this summer after injuries struck two of their first-team centre-backs.
Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman won’t return to action until Christmas at the earliest leaving Eddie Howe desperate to add defensive reinforcements this summer having already brought in Lloyd Kelly.
However, there’s now links with one of our defenders potentially leaving the club.
Reports from Turkish site Karadeniz Gazete (via Sport Witness) are suggesting that Trabzonspor could be looking at a move for Newacstle’s super-bargain Fabian Schar.
Schar has made himself practically indispensable under Eddie Howe
Fabian Schar was one of the first names on the team sheet last season as Eddie Howe rescued his Newcastle career after Steve Bruce left him to rot.
Signed for just £3million from Deportivo La Coruna by Rafa Benitez back in 2016, the Switzerland international has become invaluable to Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side making 47 appearances last season and chipping in with five goals.
With an amazing ability to regenerate and return from injury, quality defensive skills and a knack for joining in the attack, Schar would be a difficult player to replace.
We can’t see Fabian Schar going anywhere this summer
It can’t be overlooked that the 32-year-old obviously isn’t getting any younger, but we’d be mad to move him on this summer when he’s still got so much to offer.
Whether or not there’s any truth to this rumour coming from Turkey, we can’t imagine Newcastle giving the move a green light.
The only way we’d see this one happening is if it went through before Sunday for a sizeable fee to put a dent in this supposed PSR issue.
