In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that Newcastle United are locked in a three-way battle for Peterborough prospect Ronnie Edwards this summer. It is understood that the Magpies would have to rival Everton and Southampton in the race to land the English centre-back later this year.

Edwards’ Impressive Form In League One

Edwards enjoyed a solid campaign at the English club recently as he put in a series of impressive displays for them on the defensive end of the field. The 21-year-old played in 55 matches for Peterborough last season, scoring two goals in the process in multiple competitions.

The 21-year-old has been a rock at the back based on his average of 1.2 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 4.0 clearances per game in League One. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball from inside his half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 91.8% in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).

His current contract at Peterborough will run out at the end of next season which could give Newcastle a chance to sign him on a cut-price deal later this year.

Newcastle United Are Locked In A Three-Way Battle For Edwards: Is He Worth The Fight?

Edwards can sense the danger well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He is a good tackler of the ball and doesn’t mind clearing his lines when required. The English talent can even play his way out from the back when he is playing well on the field.

Standing at 1.85m, Edwards can use his strong frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. However, he is still quite unproven at the highest level and would need time to adjust to life at Newcastle United.

Edwards would inject more bite and steel into Eddie Howe’s defence. He is good enough to serve as a useful presence in the Tyneside club‘s squad next season. At 21, Edwards has the potential to be a future star in England as long as he continues to improve with each season. Hence, he would be well worth the fight, so the Magpies would be wise to get a deal done for him in this summer transfer window.
