The 19-year-old player made an impression when on loan at Feyenoord in the Netherlands last season, but the Magpies are hesitant to let go of him because they need to follow the Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

PSR regulations permit clubs to lose up to £105 million during a three-year rolling period. Newcastle is keen to complete the Gambian’s departure by Monday because the deadline is June 30 of each year.

Everton appeared to be Minteh’s most likely destination earlier this week, but negotiations broke down after United ceased pursuing Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The striker’s contract expires in a year, and the Toffees reportedly sought £40 million for him.

A trade-off involving Minteh and Calvert-Lewin would have helped both clubs combat PSR.

Lyon has since come forward, but a deal is not certain at this time. The Sun claims that Newcastle and the French team have agreed on a £40 million deal, but Minteh has refused to talk about personal terms because he wants to stay in the Premier League.

Minteh did state in an earlier statement this year: “My ultimate goal is to win the Premier League.” The team that has the most faith in me is Newcastle United. I don’t know what the future holds.

Since joining Newcastle for £7 million last summer, Minteh has not yet played a game for the club. He was previously with Danish team Odense Boldklub. He was sent on loan to Feyenoord right away, where he made 37 appearances and scored 11 goals.

The idea of Minteh leaving the Toons has divided fans. His worth might skyrocket in the upcoming years, but if he doesn’t reach his full potential, the Magpies might never get a better offer.
