Illan Meslier, the goalkeeper for Leeds United, might be considering a summer transfer to Marseille.

The Whites goalie is “enthusiastic” about competing for the French team in Ligue 1 next season, per a report from La Provence.

Although nothing is official just yet, Marseille has been in touch with the Leeds goalkeeper, who joined the team from Lorient and has played 175 games.

Meslier is under contract with Leeds until 2026, but after five years, he “wishes” to depart Elland Road this season.

Despite the fact that his contract includes a quite “high release clause,” Marseille is hoping to strike a deal for less money—even if the exact sum hasn’t been revealed yet.

Leeds expected that Meslier would get interest from other teams and would want for a price greater than £20 million for the 24-year-old goalkeeper.

Illan Meslier might be heading out of Leeds United
Meslier has been a vital member of the Whites’ team for the last five years and has been the Yorkshire club’s first-choice keeper ever since Marcelo Bielsa left.

There will be a firesale at Elland Road this summer after the team was unable to gain promotion to the Premier League. To meet the requirements, the Whites must raise about £100 million through player sales.

Meslier would likely believe that playing in the Championship for another year will make it more difficult for him to be selected for the national squad, and that moving to Marseille would be best for his personal development.

If Leeds is presented with a competitive deal, they will most likely let him go. Marek Rodak, the goalkeeper for Fulham, is actually already on the Whites’ priority list as they search for possible replacements.

Leeds and Daniel Farke will suffer greatly from Meslier’s loss, but there are several capable goalkeepers in the league who can step in for him.
