Illan Meslier, the goalkeeper for Leeds United, is “enthusiastic” about leaving Elland Road after five years to transfer to Marseille this summer.
That’s according to La Provence, who state that even if negotiations are only getting started, he would be more than happy to go back to France.
According to the newspaper, Marseille is looking to replace Pau Lopez and would prefer a goalkeeper who is more suited to the style of play Roberto de Zerbi is expected to use.
Meslier meets the requirements and has already communicated with Marseille on a possible summer transfer to the team.
The Leeds goalkeeper has made it known that he is “enthusiastic” about the possible move to the south of France, even though the two sides are just now gathering information and are in the very early phases of their interactions.
After five years at Leeds, he wishes to leave this summer after the team’s failure to return to the Premier League this year.
His present contract includes a hefty release clause, which could be problematic. However, there is a perception that a cheaper price could be negotiated for his departure—even though those terms haven’t been revealed yet.
This is most likely due to Leeds’ well-known financial problems and their requirement to raise a sizable quantity of money this summer in order to close a purported hole in their records.
Marseille must now take the initiative and extend an offer to Meslier, but his obvious desire to do so may now motivate them to do so.
