The 32-year-old scored nine times last season, putting him second in the club’s all-time Premier League top goalscorer charts behind Alan Shearer on 48. The frustration with Wilson isn’t his form in front of goal but his injury record after he missed 25 games.
Although Wilson is prone to missing a chunk of matches, Magpies’ head coach Eddie Howe has previously expressed his desire to keep Wilson, explaining that’d it’d take a lot of money to replace a striker of his quality.
However, uncertainity remains, even more so after Wilson’s cryptic Instagram post on Thursday evening that read: “Growing sometimes means leaving people behind.” This kind of activity isn’t unusual from Wilson but has still sparked a discussion on the web.
Players will be sold this summer in order to boost the club’s transfer budget under Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Wilson himself also has decision to make.
Asked about his future after scoring in United’s 4-1 win at Burnley on May 4, Wilson told reporters: “Finish the next four games. My first thought is to finish the season strong and then try and get myself in the Euros squad. I’m contracted to Newcastle still, so I’ll be back for pre-season.”
