A former Premier League goalkeeper has advised Celtic to make a serious move to sign a Newcastle United player.

Following Joe Hart’s retirement at the end of the previous season, the Hoops are searching for a number one. Brendan Rodgers has been associated with several goalkeepers, including Martin Dubravka, the backup from Newcastle. He is currently returning home from Euro 2024 after Slovakia’s 2-1 loss to England was agonizingly close to triumph.

Giorgi Mamardashvili of Georgia, who is leaving the major competition in Germany, is another star. Although Nick Pope currently holds the top spot at Newcastle United, the Valencia goalkeeper finished the previous season with 13 clean sheets in La Liga. Newcastle and other elite teams in Europe have started to give him approving looks.

Paul Robinson, a former goalkeeper for Leeds, Tottenham, and Blackburn Rovers, has been monitoring the rumors surrounding the Toon and is unsure of what Celtic could do to put a stop to them. He supports Rodgers in pushing the boat out for this stopper and thinks the Hoops can kidnap a potential Newcastle United goalie in the midst of their search for a new keeper.

Robinson told Football Insider: “He played for Valencia last season, and for me, he was probably La Liga’s goalkeeper of the tournament. The way he’s played in this tournament for Georgia, I think there’ll be a lot of teams around Europe standing up and taking notice.

“If there was any type of opportunity, if Celtic were going to push the boat out and go big, I mean, this kid’s really good, really good. He’s still only 23 years old, six foot six, dominates his box, makes some great saves; that type of signing would be a real statement signing.

“Dubravka would be a good option, but again, it’s only short term; they’re going to be in this situation again at the end of next season or the season after. I can see Celtic hijacking the deal.”
