On Sunday, Brighton formally agreed to pay £30 million to buy Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh. The 19-year-old Gambian played on loan at Feyenoord throughout the previous season. Given that they are currently connected to another elite player from Arne Slot’s previous team, the Seagulls were obviously keeping a close eye on that group.
Brighton has identified Mats Wieffer of Feyenoord as one of their top transfer targets, according to 1908.nl. The Seagulls’ initial bid was turned down. They are anticipated to try again to sign him shortly, though.
Wieffer was one of the best young players in the competition last season, starting 29 games for Feyenoord in the Eredivisie.
Wieffer was the focal point of everything Feyenoord accomplished in the previous season, whether he was playing as a roving No. 8 in a 4-3-3 or as a double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1. The 24-year-old was among the league leaders in passes into the final third and progressive passes, and he was ranked 10th in the Eredivisie overall in terms of touches.
Feyenoord’s effective attacking scheme is mostly to blame for this, but if Wieffer hadn’t thrived in the system, he would not be among the league leaders. This is encouraging for Brighton because the Seagulls usually like to control the tempo and retain possession.
On defense, Wieffer was in the top ten for tackles, interceptions, and dribblers tackled, and he also had the second-most blocks in the league.
Ultimately, Wieffer is a very well-rounded player, and with Pascal Groß supposedly on the way out, Brighton’s midfield is now severely lacking in this area. Although Carlos Baleba lacks imagination going forward, he plays a very strong defense. While not having the finest defensive game, Gilmour excels at making the right passes and maintaining possession.
Wieffer could easily start for Brighton ahead of Gilmour or Baleba if he can handle the move up to the Premier League.
According to reports, the Seagulls will have to pay Wieffer at least £30 million. Furthermore, they are not the only team trying to sign him. Wieffer is also attracting interest from major clubs like Tottenham, Liverpool, and others. According to reports, AC Milan is quite interested in signing him.
Brighton’s chances of landing their guy will be difficult given the intense competition. But if they do, Brighton will have added a fantastic talent who might continue where Pascal Groß left off.
