Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Torino star Alessandro Buongiorno.

Eddie Howe’s side are looking to add another central defender despite completing a move for Lloyd Kelly.

Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are on the sidelines with long-term injuries, while Fabian Schar and Dan Burn are on the wrong side of 30.

The Magpies have identified Buongiorno as an ideal option but Torino are demanding £38 million for a transfer, per Corriere dello Sport.

The centre-back’s current contract expires in 2028, having penned a long-term deal last summer.

Newcastle are facing competition from Napoli who have had a bid rejected for the Italy international but could return with another offer.

Standing at 6 feet 3 inches, the 25-year-old  is regarded as one of the best centre-backs in Italy.

After coming through the youth ranks at Torino, he has made 109 appearances across all competitions with nine goal contributions to his name.

However, it remains to be seen whether Newcastle are ready to meet their £38m valuation.

They sold Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35m while Yankuba Minteh joined Brighton & Hove Albion in a £33m move.

However, they will still be wary of spendings in order to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Eddie Howe’s side endured a difficult 2023-24 campaign as they missed out on any form of European football by finishing seventh in the league standings.

They will aim for a big comeback next season by bolstering their ranks this summer.
