Nottingham Forest have today announced a surprising departure from the City Ground.
At the weekend Forest managed to sign Elliot Anderson from Newcastle as things ramped up on the transfer front
Odysseas Vlachodimos joined the Magpies as part of the deal and now another exit has been confirmed.
The Greek goalkeeper was down the pecking order somewhat and his departure from Trentside wasn’t particularly surprising.
This deal – confirmed by the club this afternoon – is a little more surprising, however, and doesn’t make a deal of sense.
Nottingham Forest announce departure of Brandon Aguilera
Right now the Costa Rica starlet is playing for his country at the Copa America – but he’s found time to sign for a new club.
The Forest official website has today confirmed that Aguilera has signed for Rio Ave on a permanent deal.
This news comes as a shock with Aguilera seeming to break into the first-team under Nuno Espirito Santo last season.
He did finish the season on loan with Bristol Rovers but before that, he’d made appearances in the Premier League and the FA Cup.
Aguilera did well in those outings and a loan move to the League One outfit was designed to improve his physical output.
Now, Evangelos Marinakis has had a reshuffle and moved Aguilera on a permanent basis to one of the other clubs he owns.
Forest might have dropped the ball with Aguilera
This move does feel somewhat odd.
Forest talent Aguilera did well when he was asked to do a job last season and during his loan spell he scored twice in 12 appearances.
Moussa Niakhate called Aguilera a ‘baller’ last pre-season and it was anticipated that he’d be around the senior ranks ahead of next season too.
Now, the 21-year-old will be part of the squad at the Portuguese top-flight outfit instead with Forest letting him leave permanently.
In our view, this might be an oversight from a Forest perspective.
Okay, Aguilera might not have been ready to be a regular starter at Forest next season but after another loan move, he might have been ready to stake his claim for a place.
Only time will tell whether Forest have made the right decision on the future of Aguilera.
