The next step in Max Wober’s career must be far from his immediate thoughts at this point. The Leeds United player was a part of the Austrian team that cruelly lost Tuesday night’s Euro 2024 competition.
During the group rounds, Ralf Rangnick’s team was the unexpected heroes of the competition; nonetheless, they lost to Turkey 2-1 in the elimination round. For all those concerned, the outcome was difficult to accept, and Wober was one of many who appeared distressed when the full-time whistle was blown.
It might take some time for Turkey to recover from that defeat, and Austria’s players will be packing their bags and returning home as Turkey advances to play the Netherlands in the quarterfinals. The most likely thing on Wober’s mind will probably be a vacation, where he can unwind and take some time off from the game in a warmer area.
Still, not much longer will pass until his future becomes clear and he has to make a choice. In fact, the Championship season begins on August 10 and Wober is anticipated to report to Thorp Arch in a few weeks. The Whites have already begun pre-season training.
I think it’s safe to assume that neither Leeds nor Wober anticipated being in this position. The 26-year-old, who spent most of last summer’s preseason with Leeds, went on loan to Borussia Monchengladbach to play for the 2023–24 season.
