Championship side Coventry City have completed the double capture of departed Cambridge United duo Kai Yearn and Greg Sandiford.

The duo were let go by the League One side following the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign, but have been quickly snapped up by the Sky Blues.

Yearn & Sandiford have both experienced first-team football whilst being out on loan and will look ahead to the 2024/25 campaign with Coventry’s U21s.

How did the duo fare last season?

Sandiford has previous loan experience with Non-League side Biggleswade Town and was featured several times in the matchday squad for Cambridge United last season, although he didn’t manage to make a first-team appearance.

Meanwhile, Yearn has made his first-team debut for Cambridge, appearing seven times and has also impressed whilst on loan at Chelmsford City and King’s Lynn Town.

The 19-year-old duo have both penned contracts with the Sky Blues, ahead of the 2024/25 Professional Development League (PDL) season.

Who are the duo likely to replace at Coventry?

Beginning with Sandiford, he is a right-back and is likely to act as an immediate replacement for Dermi Lusala, who was released by the Sky Blues this summer after his contract came to an end.

Meanwhile, Yearn is a midfielder and is likely to provide further competition after Marco Rus was sold to Scottish side Ayr United earlier this summer.

A positive step in their development

Coventry City have a proud history when it comes to developing young players, both within the first-team and at U21s level.

Their academy has produced the likes of Callum Wilson and James Maddison who are both Premier League footballers and have earned caps for England.

Meanwhile, examples like Sam McCallum have proven that Coventry are more than capable of developing younger talent from the Non-League scene and turning them into high-performing players.

The arrivals of Yearn and Sandiford will help to improve Coventry’s U21s, who suffered a disappointing 2023/24 PDL campaign, whilst being exposed to a higher quality of talent which will help to make them better footballers moving forward.
