The quarter finals of Euro 2024 are due to begin today. England are getting ready for their clash with Switzerland tomorrow at 5pm GMT – but what is happening around West Bromwich Albion and the Championship in the meantime?
In a recent interview, a new signing at The Hawthorns has lent some heavy praise to head coach Carlos Corberan, describing him as ‘ambitious’ and that he ‘wants to get the best out of every player’.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the Championship, Derby County are looking to snap up a player from newly-promoted Ipswich Town – however, the Rams will face stern competition in the form of League One playoff final winners Oxford United.
New West Brom signing Torbjørn Heggem lauds Carlos Corberan’s ‘ambitious’ nature
Yesterday, West Brom completed the signing of Norwegian defender Torbjørn Heggem. The 25-year-old described the move as a ‘dream’ and also spoke favourably about Carlos Corberan, describing him as an ‘ambitious’ manager.
“To play in England is a dream for every boy growing up there and hopefully I will achieve that now I have signed. I’m really looking forward to that. The move actually came about really quickly. I first heard about Albion’s interest in me maybe about one week ago.
“I feel like the head coach is very ambitious. He was telling me about his training ideas and the way he wants to coach. He really wants to get the best out of every player and I think that will suit me well.
“I’m an ambitious player, so I think it will be a good match. I’ve been watching a lot of Albion in the past week or so and it’s impressed me a lot, I have to say. It’s a really good level and I think the style of play has impressed me. You can see the team is good with the ball and has a lot of really good ideas.”
Derby County face competition for Idris El Mizouni from Oxford United
Derby County had previously been linked with a move for Idris El Mizouni, who currently plays for Ipswich Town in the Premier League. The Tractor Boys are happy for him to leave the club in the summer, which would open the doors for the Rams to make a move – but they will face competition from the likes of Oxford United.
This is according to a recent report from TWTD, who mention that the Us and Ipswich are ‘close to reaching an agreement’ for El Mizouni’s signature. As such, Derby will have their work cut out if they want to salvage this potential move.
Last season, El Mizouni spent the campaign out on loan at Richie Wellens’ Leyton Orient – he made 40 League One appearances for the club, scoring a single goal and notching up a single assist.
