The 19-year-old centre-back — who can also play as a defensive midfielder — was spotted outside of St James’ Park last Wednesday ahead of joining from Serbian Superliga side FK Jedinstvo Ub.
According to Mozzart Sport, the Magpies have agreed an €800,000 fee, a deal that includes a 20% future sell-on clause. It’s also claimed Pivia has penned a five-year contract and will spend the upcoming season on loan, either in the Netherlands or Belgium.
Pivas made 25 senior appearances last season and represented Serbia at youth level. He recently received a glowing review from former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic — comparing him to Nemanja Vidic and Branislav Ivanovic.
“A huge talent and serious potential,” said Matic. “If he continues this way, he’s on the path to the national team. In my opinion, we haven’t seen a player with such predispositions since Nemanja Vidic and Bradislav Ivanovic. A complete player and a top professional.”
“I didn’t know what came over me when I read that,” he said. “It took me time to accept those words and process them properly, to keep my composure, and I believe that I didn’t rise. Thanks to Nemanja for thinking that way, his advice is aimed at always giving my best I never spare my opponents. I get more direct advice from coach Radovanović.”
Pivas is set to become the club’s fifth summer signing after Lewis Hall, Lloyd Kelly, Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy arrived on July 1.
