Wolves are working hard to find a replacement for club captain Max Kilman after his £40m move to Premier League rivals West Ham.
Kilman featured in all 38 games last season for the Old Gold and was an ever present as the club secured a 14th place finish in the league. He was also an important player in years gone by under both Bruno Lage and Spainard Julen Lopetegui, who he will now be reunited with at the London Stadium next term.
Earlier this week BirminghamWorld reported that Gary O’Neil’s men are set to suffer a setback in their pursuit of Feyenoord defender Thomas Beelen. Wolves had been given an estimated valuation of around £17m for the talented young defender, but after transfer speculation it now appears likely that the 23-year-old will sign a new and improved contract to secure his future in Rotterdam as they once again push for the Eredivisie title.
This setback means that Wolves have now turned their attention to an alternative target in Switzerland international Nico Elvedi of Borussia Monchengladbach.
Sports Witness understands that the 27-year-old is on Wolves’ radar for the second straight summer, having allegedly agreed personal terms last year.
Elvedi featured 30 times last season in the Bundesliga for Gerardo Seoane’s side and has played in the top-flight of German football for nine years, making 260 appearances in the process whilst scoring 14 goals.
The Swiss defender is capable of playing both as a central defender and a right back and was notably part of the Monchengladbach team in 2020 which reached the knockout stage of the Champions League for the first time since 1978.
Elvedi has a wealth of experience at international level and has represented Switzerland on 53 occasions, forming part of the team which defeated France on penalties in Euro 2020 and featuring regularly as the Swiss reached the round of 16 in the World Cup in 2022.
He was called up for his fourth tournament this summer at Euro 2024 but failed to get on the pitch as his team crashed out in the quarter-final after a nail-biting penalty shoot-out defeat to England.
Wolves are determined to land the player and Sports Witness understand that he has a release clause in his contract of just over £8.5m, which would also allow O’Neil’s team to invest some of the Kilman fund in other areas of the pitch
