Leeds United have agreed a season-long loan deal for Bournemouth midfielder Joe Rothwell, with the player in town for a medical already according to Mark McAdam.

Writing on his personal X account (11 July), the Sky Sports reporter says the 29-year-old is set to undergo a medical at Elland Road that should be completed within the next 48 hours.

Rothwell spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan at Southampton and helped them earn promotion to the Premier League, but will now be part of Daniel Farke’s squad for the 2024/25 campaign.

Leeds United to sign Joe Rothwell from Bournemouth

Out of absolutely nowhere, Leeds have sealed a deal to bolster their midfield and help Farke fill a problem position.

After the sale of Archie Gray to Tottenham, the Whites found themselves light in the centre of the park with Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev and Glen Kamara their only natural midfield options with first-team experience.

But Ampadu spent most of last season in defence, while Gruev has been linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund [Sky Sports, 4 June] and Kamara has agreed personal terms [Ouest-France, 3 July] ahead of a potential move to Rennes in France.

That means Farke was desperate to add some experience to a young squad that has also lost captain Liam Cooper, Stuart Dallas and Luke Ayling with their contracts expiring.

Rothwell will bring plenty of energy, quality and experience to the side and on loan it’s a deal with minimal risk. It’s a win-win for everyone involved, and fans should be happy.
