According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are keen on signing a highly sought-after playmaker from the continent.

Newcastle narrowly missed out on a European finish last term so the onus will be on Eddie Howe to challenge for the top six this season.

To do that, he’ll need heavy investment in the squad as the lack of depth has led to a number of serious injuries.

A sprinkle of quality is also needed in attack and with that said, Romano has confirmed that they have made contact to sign a highly-rated attacker.

Newcastle have made contact to sign Xavi Simons

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Newcastle enquired about PSG attacker Xavi Simons in recent days.

“Let me tell you that another club that asked for example for information on Xavi Simons was Newcastle to understand the situation of the player, but again was few days ago, not months ago,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“And this is why Leipzig and Bayern remain the two favourites.”

The Netherlands international, who netted a wondergoal against England in the Euro 2024 semi-final, is expected to cost around £52m this summer, so it remains to be seen if The Magpies can sign him whilst complying with Profit and Sustainability regulations.

Xavi Simons will want Champions League football

It seems highly unlikely that Simons, labelled as ‘world class’ per DAZN, would depart PSG for Newcastle at this stage, especially without the prospect of Champions League football.

Such is why Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig are seen as the favourites to land his signature. Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in recent weeks.

Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White could be an alternative target for Howe’s side.
