With Celtic looking like they are about to make their first signing of the summer this week, the fans will be delighted that the club are now making moves in the transfer market.

It’s been a long summer for the Hoops support as they have had to endure endless speculation surrounding who may or may not be coming into or leaving the club, but after the developments over the last few days, Brendan Rodgers seems to be getting closer to strengthening his squad.

The rumours surrounding Kasper Schmeichel joining Celtic took a dramatic turn after Fabrizio Romano shared that the big Dane was in talks with the Parkhead club to sort out the ‘final details’ of the move.

And it is a signing that BBC pundit, Leeanne Crichton, believes will be ‘massive’ for Celtic next season.

Schmeichel is still a top operator

Schmeichel is due to fly in for a medical this week and whilst the deal hasn’t been completed yet, Crichton is in no doubt that the Danish Euro 2024 ‘keeper would be a ‘big signing’.

Crichton said [BBC Sportsound], “He’s a good signing, a safe signing as well. I think we’ve seen him for the last number of years.

“I don’t think Celtic could gamble with bringing an unknown in. You look at how poorly Barkas worked out.

“I don’t think Barkas, by all accounts, is a bad goalkeeper. It just didn’t work for him, for whatever reason. The pressure, Kasper Schmeichel is someone who has dealt with that.

“He’s a big character and has had a great career in the game. He’s clearly still operating at the top level of the game as well, internationally.

“So for me, it’s a safe bet and a big signing as well that will appease a lot of the fans which is the big thing in pre-season to do that.”

With 105 caps for Denmark, Schmeichel claimed four of those at this year’s Euros. In three draws against Slovakia, England and Serbia, the 37-year-old conceded just two goals as he booked the Danes’ place in the last 16.

A 2-0 defeat to Germany saw Schmeichel exit the tournament but he was the team’s best player against the tournament hosts after making seven saves and preventing a further two goals. [Fotmob]

Hopefully the medical will go past with no issues and Schmeichel can book his place on the plane for the 2024 USA Tour.

Because once this signing is done, it will allow Brendan Rodgers to now focus on other areas of the team that need strengthening especially after the departure of Hyeongyu Oh to Genk yesterday.
