The Rangers boss, Philippe Clement, was questioned about the future of his captain and vice-captain this summer amid persistent rumors they could leave Ibrox amid interest from Saudi Arabia and England [The Sun, 30 June]. Clement acknowledged Rangers will consider offers for James Tavernier and Connor Goldson if they arrive.

Even though Clement insisted that many of those rumors were “fake news,” he acknowledged that the Rangers will take offers for any player this summer, including the seasoned defense tandem, and that they won’t be playing as frequently in the 2024–2025 season.

“I have read a lot of things that you say are totally untrue, and there is a lot of speculation in Glasgow,” Clement remarked.

False information. However, that comes with living in Glasgow. You can’t respond to every false report because that will occupy all of your time.

“They won’t play sixty games in the upcoming season, and the conjecture surrounding them is no different from that which can be said about any player.” For us, it is the same.

“We’ll see and talk if someone shows up with the appropriate amount of money. However, in order to make it better, you must constantly observe, replace anyone needed, and have enough cash on hand to do so. If not, it is also useless. In this sense, it involves striking a balance.

Rangers transfer news finally drops from Ibrox

The club have been preparing for a big summer throughout the transfer window and even before it started, and they’re following through.

Six players have left the club thus far, while six have entered; however, several more trades are anticipated to be completed before the season starts [Four Lads, 11 July], which implies that more players will depart.

Clement wants to create a culture at Ibrox where players have to work for their shirts. It seems logical that Jack Butland is seen as irreplaceable given his performances from the previous season.

However, nobody’s status is guaranteed in a season where the club underperformed overall. Players vying for a spot on the team benefit from increased competitiveness and value in training, and it also communicates to all that the manager takes business seriously.

For the Rangers, a new era has long been necessary to return to the top of the mountain and dispel the notion that they are merely a competitive team.
