Kasper Schmeichel’s new Celtic teammates have warmly received the arrival of the Danish goalkeeper with one player declaring it a “massive signing” for the club.
Schmeichel has agreed a one-year contract with the Bhoys, having most recently played with Anderlecht in Belgium.
The 37-year-old was available on a free transfer but has been performing at a high level for club and country over the last 12 months.
The Dane arrives alongside Finnish international Viljami Sinisalo this week as Brendan Rodgers oversees a revamp of the goalkeeping department following Joe Hart’s retirement.
Hopes are high that Schmeichel can become a big hit in Glasgow and four Celtic players have been giving their reaction to the transfer.
Celtic players deliver verdict on Kasper Schmeichel transfer
Speaking to Celtic TV, James Forrest said: “I’ve never met him but the gaffer’s had him at Leicester before and obviously Joe has spoken about him a few times and spoken very highly of him, so everyone is looking forward to meeting him and playing alongside him.”
Greg Taylor added: “It’s a massive signing for us. Joe Hart was a great servant to the club and a great guy to have around the place so hopefully that’s what we’ve got again.
“Playing in the Euros for Denmark you saw that Kasper’s a real leader and we’re delighted to have him.”
Kasper Schmeichel is a “like-for-like” replacement for Joe Hart
The Celtic stars were speaking at a special event in downtown DC, hosted by JD Sports on Thursday night. Fans turned out for a question and answer session, with the Celtic TV crew tagging along to get more thoughts on Schmeichel’s arrival.
Anthony Ralston stated: “He’ll be a great addition to the team. Obviously, everybody loved Joe and he did amazing things for the club, so to have Kasper in now he’ll be a great addition to the squad and we wish him all the best.”
While Liam Scales concluded: “If you could go and get a like-for-like, he’s the one. You’re losing out on an internationalist and a Premier League winner but then you’re getting another one in so we’re really looking forward to greeting him and playing with him.”
It won’t be long until the veteran meets his new squad. Schmeichel is expected to arrive at the Celtic training camp in the United States imminently after travelling from Europe.
He could make his debut against Manchester City or Chelsea next week.
