Everton will intensify their pursuit to sign a new winger once Amadou Onana completes his move to Aston Villa, sources have told Football Insider.

The Merseyside club have agreed a deal in principle to sell the 22-year-old midfielder to Villa for around £50 million.

Onana’s move will be finalised once the Belgium international returns from his holiday. He was given extended leave due to his participation at Euro 2024.

Everton have held preliminary talks over multiple winger signings, including Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto and Napoli’s Jesper Lindstrom.

Talks with Napoli had initially been for a swap deal, Everton’s Ukrainian full-back Vitaliy Mykolenko would head to the Serie A and Lindstrom would join the Premier League club (July 18)

Those talks collapsed as Sean Dyche is keen on keeping the 25-year-old left-back at Goodison Park but the club remain interested in signing Lindstrom.

Everton see Gnonto and Lindstrom as wing improvements

New £18 million signing Iliman Ndiaye is capable of playing on either wing but prefers to be used as a centre-forward or a number 10.

That leaves Dwight McNeil as Everton’s only permanent wing option following Lewis Dobbin’s move to Aston Villa along with Jack Harrison and Arnaut Danjuma’s returns to their respective parent clubs.

McNeil only managed to score three times in 41 appearances for the club last season whereas Gnonto scored nine goals in 44 appearances for Leeds.

Lindstrom is yet to score for Napoli but only played 759 minutes for the Italian giants in all competitions last campaign.
