Ianis Hagi is now just one step away from leaving Rangers to rejoin former side Fiorentina in another eight-figure exit deal, Digi Sport reports.
According to the Romanian outlet’s website on 26 July the winger is on his way to Serie A in a deal which will cost the Italian side €2.5million [£2.11m] and will see the Light Blues net €1m [£844,000] less than they paid for him.
But the club are set to retain a 10 per-cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement for the 25-year-old who spent last season on loan in La Liga with Alaves.
Hagi’s exit is the latest in a sudden slew of departures with Connor Goldson’s move to Aris Limassol almost complete [Derek Clark, 26 July] and Sam Lammers is confirmed back in the Eredivisie with FC Twente for as much as £4.2million [Andrea Losapio, 24 July].
Rangers to sell Ianis Hagi to Fiorentina after Euro 2024 exploits
It is a measure of how things have not gone to plan for Hagi in recent seasons that the terms of the deal look relatively agreeable from a Gers perspective.
As his original fee will have been amortised over the four years since his permanent signing from Genk the cash received should represent a profit on the books and a boost to Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen’s transfer budget.
The sell-on clause might seem like an afterthought but an extra £800,000 arrived from Leeds United in recent weeks thanks to Glen Kamara moving onto Rennes [BBC Sport, 16 July] a year after departing Ibrox so it could prove to be important.
Hagi has long since ceased to be a factor at Ibrox after a serious injury saw him lose more than a year of action and multiple managerial changes left him lost in the shuffle and out on loan.
Solid performances for his country at Euro 2024 may have helped generate a market for his services and although the cash isn’t likely to be what Rangers wanted for him it is better than nothing at this stage.
Personal terms have already been agreed according to SportperSure on 21 July so if the clubs are now settling on terms this one should be confirmed any time now.
