Brighton have made signing a right back one of their top priorities this transfer window. The Seagulls have been linked to a number of big names, including Benfica right back Alexander Bah.
Brighton view Alexander Bah as their top RB target
A new report now says the club will not sign any of those targets if they cannot offload some one of their current right backs.
According to Caught Offside, Brighton have made Alexander Bah their top transfer target. However, the club will not make an offer unless they sell Joel Veltman and/or Tariq Lamptey. Both players do not have certain futures at the club. Their contracts both expire next June.
Brighton could make a huge profit off Veltman and Lamptey
If the club can sell Veltman and Lamptey before the end of the window, they could make a huge profit on the players. Lamptey joined Brighton in 2020 from Chelsea for around £1m. The Seagulls also got Veltman for a cut price from Ajax. The Dutch international was signed for just £900k in 2020.
Lamptey has previously been linked to Sporting CP on loan, but the Seagulls opted to keep him around. Similarly, Veltman was linked to many clubs in Europe, including Barcelona, before Brighton pushed hard for him to sign a new deal.
Joel Veltman struggled for starts last season
There’s been no reports about who might be interested in the pair this summer. In fact, it could be difficult to sell Veltman and Lamptey. In addition to both having just one year left on their deals. Both players did not have good seasons last year.
Veltman struggled to find a starting role in De Zerbi’s side last season. A knee injury further limited him in the second half of the season. Lamptey has suffered many injuries in his short career with Brighton. He played just 914 minutes in the Premier League last season.
Alexander Bah has a concerning injury history
Benfica’s Bah has also suffered his fair share of injuries. He has missed 32 matches with injury since joining the Eagles in 2022.
To me, it does not make sense to replace an injury-prone right back with another injury-prone right back, but clearly Brighton see something with Bah. Given their history, I should probably trust their judgment.
