Wout Weghorst, a striker for Burnley, has agreed to be sold to Trabzonspor, according to Yagiz Sabuncuoglu (via Sport Witness).
After having their Premier League comeback prematurely ended after just one season, Burnley is preparing for another year in the Championship.
Under Vincent Kompany, the Clarets won the second division title in 2022–2023. However, the Belgian manager was unable to repeat the team’s success in the top flight and left for Bayern Munich.
Now that Burnley has a new manager, Scott Parker, the job is to get the team back on track and ideally make them a premier league team again.
Weghorst, 31, joined the team in 2021 and has spent three stints on loan away from Turf Moor.
Prior to moving to Manchester United, where he only managed one assist in 17 Premier League games, he scored eight goals in 16 league games while playing for Besiktas. The previous season, he scored seven goals in 28 games while playing in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim.
With only a year remaining on his Burnley deal, moving this summer always felt like the most likely course of action. Earlier this summer, Trabzonspor expressed interest in the striker, and it appears that an agreement has now been
An unsuccessful transition
The 31-year-old didn’t exactly play well for the Clarets in the Premier League before their destiny was sealed, and it seemed like he had little desire in playing for Burnley when they were relegated.
The best thing the club could do to truly move on from this ordeal would be to relocate permanently.
Weghorst participated in the Netherlands’ summer EURO campaign and once again came up with a vital goal for his country coming off the bench.
With a lengthier deal, Trabzonspor gives him the opportunity to play professional football and further secures his future; Burnley may benefit from the salaries saved as the transfer window closes.
The season ahead
Parker has two promotions under his belt as boss so far in his career. Fulham and Bournemouth both earned their way into the Premier League under the Englishman and he will be hoping to add Burnley to that list this season.
Once again this season, Burnley will have a more than capable squad for this level of football and it will be hoped that they make no mistake in achieving promotion this season.
However, things could still change between now and deadline day and the club must be ready to react if any of their key players are tempted away in the coming weeks.
Burnley begin their Championship season with an away trip to Kenilworth Road to face Luton Town, a fixture which was a top flight one last season.
