Jose Cifuentes has received the green light to leave Rangers on a loan-to-buy basis after work permit complications with Cruzeiro, according to the Glasgow Times.

The online outlet reported on 9 August that the Ecuador international is set to travel to Greece for a medical ahead of a loan move to Aris, who’ll have the obligation to buy him for £4million next year [All About Aris].

This deal has “been strangled in red tape” with the Serie A side having to cancel the loan deal with the Gers which was difficult due to Brazilian work permit regulations.

Jose Cifuentes facing Rangers exit

After a failed spell in Brazil, the 25-year-old now looks set for a move to Greece rather than staying at Ibrox for the season.

It has been a tough spell for the midfielder in Glasgow ever since his move from Los Angeles where he has struggled to settle in.

This has seen Cifuentes manage just 20 appearances for the Light Blues before making the ill-fated loan move to Cruzeiro.

With his spell being cut short, there may have been potential for him to play a part in Philippe Clement’s squad this campaign.

It appears that the Belgian doesn’t rate the Ecuadorian and as a result, a move away seems to be beneficial for all parties.

The Gers aren’t blessed with too many midfield options, even with the addition of Connor Barron, so this move shows where he fits into plans at Ibrox.

There will be hope that he can reignite his form on loan but supporters won’t be holding out much hope.
