Leeds United has 71 percent of the possession and has produced scoring opportunities with 17 shots overall. But on Saturday at Elland Road, the Whites lost 1-0 to Burnley, and manager Daniel Farke is baffled by the outcome.
Luca Koleosho gave Burnley a 1-0 lead in the eighteenth minute of the hotly contested match, a lead the visitors would maintain for the remainder of the match.
Nonetheless, one major issue when looking at the number is the two big chances missed by Leeds in this contest. Mateo Joseph was one player who missed his scoring chance, and BBC commentator Scott Read didn’t hide his criticism of Joseph’s missed chance to give Leeds a goal in the match.
“A terrible mistake at the back and a huge get out of jail free card for Burnley,” Read said. “In theory, they should be 1-0 down. But it’s a stinking finish from Mateo Joseph.”
Daniel Farke: Leeds loss to Burnely is a frustrating result
After the match, Leeds United manager Daniel Farke spoke to reporters and noted his frustration with the result, considering the offensive numbers that the squad produced but failing to find the back of the net.
“Of course, it’s the most frustrating thing in football when you go back to the dressing room and can hardly explain why you didn’t win this game,” Farke said (h/t Yorkshire Evening Post). “After this difficult international break, just one session together, I didn’t expect we would be that dominant. Really happy with our dominance, how we started on the front foot, dominated each and every statistic.
“The decisive moments we were not effective enough. We should have scored after two minutes, [needed] a better finish, Mateo one on one, Willy Gnonto then eight yards out. We should have a penalty again. Many corners but the only team who scores out of a corner is them, from a corner for us. Manor is there with the wrong decision, decided to turn around, didn’t have to take this risk, he slipped and they were away with an 85-yard counter.
“Congratulations and credit to them for a good finish. When I compare how they scored and what we have created, we had better chances, easier chances to score and didn’t take them. This is where we have to be self critical. I was disappointed to concede out of such a situation.”
