Matt Luff, a forward, has signed a player tryout agreement (PTO) with the Florida Panthers.
Luff played for the Grand Rapids Griffins, an American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, during the 2023–24 season. In 26 games, he scored 10 goals and provided eight assists for a total of 18 points.
Prior to the 2023–24 season, Luff signed a one-year deal with Detroit. He last participated in the NHL in the 2022–23 season, when he scored four points in 19 games before having surgery on his wrist.
After an outstanding rookie camp, the Oakville native, who was an undrafted free agency forward, earned an entry-level deal with the Los Angeles Kings in 2016. In 33 games, he scored eight goals and provided three assists in his NHL debut with the Kings in 2018–19. Luff inked a contract with the Nashville Predators after spending three years with the Kings. Over the course of five NHL seasons, he has played in 106 games and scored 15 goals and 27 points with Los Angeles,Nashville, and Detriot.
Luff, meantime, has seen success in the AHL. In 223 games with the Ontario Reign, Milwaukee Admirals, and Grand Rapids, he has 67 goals and 96 assists for 163 points.
Luff played three seasons with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) before joining the NHL. In 170 games, he had 61 goals, 76 assists, and 96 penalty minutes.
Luff joins the Stanley Cup winners on a PTO, joining a group of free agents that includes Nate Schmidt, A.J. Greer, Tomas Nosek, Jesper Boqvist, and Adam Schmidt ahead of the 2024–25 season.
