Dermot Gallagher, a former Premier League referee, has offered his assessment of the contentious penalty ruling in Leeds United’s defeat to Burnley. Manor Solomon was taken down by a challenge from Joe Worrall in the first half of the Elland Road match, and Whites manager Daniel Farke was certain his team should have been awarded a spot kick.
The players for United called for a penalty, but referee James Bell remained unimpressed and gave them a corner instead. “Brilliant refereeing Rob because the defender actually gets the ball,” Gallagher remarked in a live statement on Sky Sports News’ “Ref Watch” section. All day long, there appears to be a penalty, but he gets the ball. When he turns around, he grabs the ball; it was a very wise mo.
Burnley head coach Scott Parker responded, “I’m not sitting on the fence, but I haven’t seen it,” when questioned about his thoughts on the event. I didn’t believe it was appropriate to be open with you right away. He appeared to have cut his toe on it. I believe it would be unjust of me to make a statement on that.
After their first Championship loss of the year, Farke remained optimistic. “Obviously, returning to the dressing room after a game and finding it difficult to explain why you didn’t win is the most frustrating thing in football,” Farke remarked.
“We had just one practice together after this challenging international break, and I didn’t think we would be that dominant. I was really pleased with our domination, how we got off to a fast start, and how we dominated every statistic.
“We were not sufficiently successful in the critical times. We needed a stronger finish, with Mateo going one on one and Willy Gnonto coming in from eight yards away, as we could have scored after two minutes.
“We ought to be penalized once more. Many corners, but they are the only team that scores for us from a corner. Manor [Solomon] made the incorrect choice by turning around when he didn’t have to, slipping and giving them an 85-yard counter. Kudos and appreciation for a strong conclusion.
“We had better, simpler opportunities to score and didn’t take them, based on my comparison of how they scored and what we produced. Here’s where we need to be critical of ourselves. I felt let down when I had to give up in this kind of circumstance.
We could talk about how there were more opportunities we could have taken. “It’s quite natural, they are invited to drop deeper and deeper, of course it’s difficult,” the goalie stated in his explanation for being there. Due to their foreign commitments, many of our main players felt a little more pressure in the second half of the game. Some of them, who are usually on the field all the time, are replaced.
“You’re not permitted to talk about this after a loss, but the game itself—not the outcome—encouraged me even more that we’ll have a successful season. If you can play that dominant and force them to defend for the most of the game, you usually have a good foundation for a successful season.”
