At an Eastern Market tailgate on Sunday afternoon, what should have been supporters talking and dissecting the Detroit Lions’ defeat in a football game instead turned into tragedy.

“An altercation led to gunplay that left one man dead, a second man critically injured, and a suspect in custody,” the Detroit News reported.

Regretfully, the incident happened at Riopelle Street’s Shed 6 around 4:30 p.m., right after the Lions’ opening-day defeat at Ford Field.

“A big fight started and broke up in a matter of minutes. They met again a little distance from the scene of the first altercation. “The two combatants raised their hands as if they were going to fight,” stated James White, the head of police in Detroit. “A male Oak Park resident who is fighting with other people takes out a gun and fires at least twice. There were two strikes.”

According to Detroit’s police chief, there are far too many people drawing their weapons during physical altercations, and tailgating, drinking, and carrying a gun are a surefire recipe for trouble.

“Guns, drinking, and tailgating don’t go together,” stated White. “That is absurd. Fight if you’re going to fight. Everyone feels tougher when they hold a gun. And now we have two individuals shot, one deceased, and another person who is likely going to be charged with murder.

Since thousands of admirers were apparently close, images and videos have gone viral on social media.

“We see (aggression) at carnivals, we see it at social events,” White stated. “Everyone needs to own a firearm. At a tailgate, a gun is not necessary. The fact that the Lions lost and a few people got into a fight should have been today’s major news.
