The Hawks will practice for the first time on Thursday, followed by their first preseason game next week and their regular-season opener on October 8. Here’s what to look out for during camp.

The Chicago Blackhawks have named the 35th captain in franchise history for the 2024 season, and it is not second-year center Connor Bedard. The Blackhawks have named Nick Foligno as captain for the upcoming season.

Foligno is the first player to wear the “C” in Chicago since Jonathan Toews, who held the title from 2008-2023. Last season, the Blackhawks did not name a captain, mostly out of respect for Toews.

Foligno’s selection is no surprise. He was the de facto leader in his first season with the Blackhawks and signed a two-year extension in January, making him an excellent transitional captain before the position is presumably handed over to Connor Bedard.

“In a very short amount of time, Nick has quickly earned the respect of his teammates and our staff,” Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said in a statement. “Nick’s authoritative presence in the locker room has been critical in helping the squad discover its identity. He acted as a mentor.
