Head coach Dave Canales revealed Wednesday that the Carolina Panthers are not considering moving former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young, who was benched on Monday
. Since the Panthers benched Young, the potential of trading the second-year quarterback has emerged, but Canales has denied that the Panthers will trade him. “That’s not something we’re considering,” Canales stated, according to Joe Person of The Athletic. “We now have a terrific scenario with our quarterbacks, as they are experienced. “We love where we are.”
After a poor start to his second NFL season, the Panthers benched Young. The Panthers were thrashed by the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers in their first two games, and Young showed no indications of improvement after a disappointing rookie season. In the Panthers’ Week 2 loss to the Chargers, Young completed 18 of 26 ball attempts for 84 yards. He did not try a pass farther than 15 yards down the field and averaged only 3.2 yards per attempt. Thirteen of his 18 completions were within five yards of the line of scrimmage. Young has completed 55.4 percent of his passes this season, totaling only 245 yards and three interceptions. He didn’t throw any touchdown passes.
Along with that, Canales stated the day before Young was benched that he was still the quarterback. Finally, Canales indicated Monday that they shifted to Andy Dalton as their starter after analyzing film and determining that Dalton gave them the best opportunity to win right now. Dalton is an experienced veteran who has served as a backup for various teams since departing the Cincinnati Bengals at the end of the 2019 season. Canales also stated at his Wednesday press conference that he “absolutely” believes Young can become a franchise quarterback in the future. Canales also stated that they are keen on growing their athletes and are “fully committed” to his growth and development.
