On Wednesday, the New York Yankees have a chance to become the first American League team to secure a postseason spot. A win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday will secure the Yankees’ position in the 2024 MLB postseason.

They would be the first team in the AL to punch their ticket to October. The Yankees have the best record in the American League, starting Wednesday at 88-63. They currently lead the AL East by four games over the Baltimore Orioles. The Bronx Bombers’ magic number of one would secure them at least a Wild Card spot.

With an 80-71 record, the Minnesota Twins hold the final Wild Card spot. They have a 1.5-game lead over the Detroit Tigers for the playoff spot.

The Yankees missed the playoffs in 2023, winning only 82 games. They made it to the ALCS in 2022, which also marked the team’s final division championship. The Bronx Bombers hold a one-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians for the American League’s top spot. The Yankees hold the tiebreaker between the two teams, having won four of six games versus the AL Central leader this season.

No National League team has clinched a playoff spot, either. Both the Milwaukee Brewers and the Philadelphia Phillies will have the opportunity to do so on Wednesday. The Yankees have 11 games left on their regular season schedule. To cap up the season, they will face the Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Their next game is on Wednesday night against the Mariners. Casey Fahrer, a recent Syracuse University graduate, contributes to Inside The Pinstripes. You can reach him at caseyfahrer716@gmail.com.
