A major MLB insider believes the New York Yankees and New York Mets will compete for the top two free agents in this year’s market.

The Yankees and Mets are among the teams having something to play for when the MLB games begin today. This week, the Bronx Bombers secured a playoff position in the 2024 MLB playoffs. The Mets are competing for one of the three Wild Card positions in the National League.

Both teams have had an extremely productive season. However, regardless of what they accomplish in October, the teams are likely to remain busy throughout the offseason. This is especially true given the availability of two game-changing stars on the free-agent market this winter.

The approaching free agency of All-Star outfielder Juan Soto and ace pitcher Corbin Burnes was discussed in a round table column on MLB.com by beat reporters. Mark Feinsand, a seasoned MLB insider, believes the two New York baseball clubs could fight to the death.

Do the New York Yankees hope the New York Mets sign Corbin Burnes?

“The Mets and Yankees could be going to war over Soto and Burnes this winter, but only if Gerrit Cole opts out and leaves the Bronx,” Feinsand stated in an email. “If Cole stays, I believe the Yankees will use their money to re-sign Soto — or replace him. “If Cole leaves, anything is possible.”

Soto is anticipated to receive a contract worth more than $500 million. Burnes, a four-time All-Star pitcher, is expected to sign a large contract on the open market as well. However, Feinsand suggested that the New York Yankees may not be too disappointed after losing a bidding war with the New York Mets for the Baltimore Orioles ace.
