Bertuzzi is stepping up with the Blackhawks after signing a $22 million, four-year contract on the first day of free agency this summer. He has been playing on a line with Connor Bedard and Taylor Hall since the beginning of training camp, hinting that his new team has high ambitions for the rugged winger.
“It’s learning every day,” Bertuzzi said after Monday’s practice. “I played with Hallsy briefly in Boston, so I’m familiar with him coming in here. Obviously, we have a few more workouts and preseason games to figure things out.
Coach Luke Richardson said he wants to look at some different lines as early as Tuesday, and there will be additional combinations during the season.
Bertuzzi’s ability to win puck fights and willingness to go to the front of the net appear to compliment Bedard and Hall’s scoring abilities.
“He’s a very skilled player. … Really good in puck battles and getting the puck back,” says Bedard. “There’s obviously a reason he’s been a really good player for a while, so it’s been fun so far.”
Bertuzzi, 29, was Detroit’s second-round choice in the 2013 draft. Todd, his uncle, also had an 18-year career in the league.

“He’s strong in front of the net,” Richardson remarked. “He has a good physical presence and is a greasy goal scorer around there. He has a solid powerful stick and can withstand physicality while still making plays, whether it’s scoring or making good passes down low to other players. He can play with anyone; that kind of player.”
Bertuzzi, an upcoming free agent, was moved to Boston for two draft picks in March 2023, giving some depth for the Bruins with Hall.
