The Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk missed a penalty kick against Cardiff City, which prompted discussion. Most fans, however, believe the Dutchman will make a comeback.
Just after the hour mark in south Wales, Struijk had the opportunity to put Leeds ahead 2-0 when teammate Jayden Bogle was fouled in the Cardiff box. However, goalkeeper Jak Alnwick’s legs denied his shot. On a day when numerous opportunities were squandered following Largie Ramazani’s first goal, the center-back’s somewhat pedestrian strike down the middle heightened tension in the other end.
Late in the game, Joel Piroe gave Leeds their second goal, sending all three points back to Elland Road. However, concerns have been raised over Struijk’s eligibility to take penalties ever since. Farke prefers Piroe, although he hasn’t started a league match yet. In the season opener against Portsmouth, Struijk calmly tucked away his penalty kick.
Leeds has several of excellent finishers at their disposal for their next penalty, but Struijk’s boss may still support him given his solid track record. Supporters were ready to share their opinions on social media when the YEP asked about penalty responsibility.
Steven Grayson wrote, “Scored 9 out of 10, but if Piroe on pitch he’s number 1 choice our best finisher,” in reference to Struijk’s respectable record.
The defense was given spot kicks by Andre Arwas, who gave stern justification for doing so: “Did people say this when Summerville missed a penalty at Cardiff? No, they didn’t. Up until that point, Pascal had never missed a competitive penalty. He takes notes well. Simply put, I had a horrible one. Nobody removing Harry Kane’s pencils. When compared, he’s missed a lot. Proceed.
