The rivalry between the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks dates back many years. It was renewed tonight in the preseason, and the pyrotechnics between the two clubs have already begun.

AJ Spellacy, the Chicago Blackhawks’ top prospect, was aiming to make an impact in his first NHL game. He decided to line up Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond for a huge hit.

In response to the blow, both Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin sought vengeance on the young forward. Lucas Raymond initially slashed AJ Spellacy. Then, as the puck entered the zone, Dylan Larkin hit AJ Spellacy with a vicious elbow to the head.

The puck was nowhere near the action, and Dylan Larkin was definitely out to exact retribution on AJ Spellacy for the prior play. AJ Spellacy, a 2024 third-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, was getting his first taste of NHL action. Dylan Larkin went out of his way to purposefully shoot at AJ Spellacy’s head long after the puck had disappeared.

Even though it is still preseason, it would be shocking if Dylan Larkin received no discipline. The NHL’s Department of Player Safety, directed by George Parros, should have an easy decision here. From all viewpoints, this hit is a suspendable offense, and the league must make a statement to protect its players.
