According to Craig Hope of The Mail, Anthony Gordon and Newcastle United are “close” to finalizing a contract deal that will guarantee the England winger’s future there.

The player and the club were reportedly having slow and stagnant talks, according to a story from The Telegraph earlier today. However, Hope is now asserting that the talks have picked up speed and direction.

Hope writes, “We understand there has been significant progress in recent weeks, with the package’s framework in place. Those discussions have accelerated.” Club insiders are optimistic that the last details will be approved soon.

The North-East correspondent also stated that Gordon, 23, wants to stay at Newcastle and is a Tyneside native, despite interest from Arsenal and Liverpool, to whom he nearly moved as part of an incredible trade deal for Joe Gomez.

Although Gordon has been a regular starter for the entire season, he has only scored once, the equalizer against AFC Bournemouth, despite having a mixed record. Hope continues, “Gordon hasn’t been as consistent as he was last season, but there’s a sense around the club that he’s almost back to where he was, which earned him a spot in the England team in March. Certainly, a new contract and a bonus for his advancement would be beneficial.

If Gordon decides to commit his future to the team, this would be a huge win for Paul Mitchell and a nice lift for Howe following a difficult summer and a frustrating 3-1 loss at Fulham last weekend.
